One of the most frequent misconceptions
about diamonds are that they are the hardest natural materials on this
planet and they are virtually unbreakable.
While it is true that they are the hardest materials, it is equally true
that they are extremely brittle and can be damaged very easily.
Follow these tips and prolong the life of your diamond cutting tools:
- Air bearing spindles tend to “roll” while
in their stationary position. If the diamond is in contact during “roll”,
the cutting edge will be damaged.
- The spindle must be locked to prevent “roll” during
scribe testing.
- Use materials such as “Plasticine” or “Blue
Tack”,
or a similar clay-based product to stop “roll”.
- Never hand hold the spindle. Manually held spindles
are insecure and the slightest “roll” will damage the
tool.
- Never remove the tool from its container until you are ready to
use it.
- Hold the cutting tool by the shank, never touch the
diamond when cleaning it.
- Always apply the diamond to the part when rotating in the cutting
direction only.
- Clean diamonds only with a fast drying solvent with a dampened
tissue around the cutting edge. Never use a cotton bud.
- Change tools before too much wear takes place
to prolong the overall tool life.
