It is not recommended to drill with cylindrical milling tools. Theoretically
it is possible, but because of possible problems with chip-congestion the
tool can easily break.
When milling small grooves, the chip must be able to clear the groove. It
is essential to start each milling process with a 'ramping' process (an X
or Y movement when lowering the tool into the material). This will ensure
that an angled groove will be created to reach the working depth at a point
where the milling process will begin.
Never plunge or drill at the beginning of the process.
Milling IOL lenses at normal temperatures:
The feed should not exceed spindle speed (RPM)
divided by 1000.
This results in a feed per revolution of maximum 1µm.
For example: at 40,000 RPM the XY feed must not exceed 40 mm/min
Milling IOL lenses at freezing temperatures:
The feed should not exceed spindle speed (RPM) divided
by 300.
This results in a feed per revolution of maximum 3,5µm.
For example: at 60,000 RPM milling at 200mm/min. is possible.
