The rate of wear in a tool depends on many factors, ranging from the quality of the diamond, the accuracy and sharpness, the material that is being cut, the type of machine that is used, the depth of cuts, just to name a few. Although diamond is the hardest known material, mechanical wear will result from constant applied pressure. Chemical wear results from the reaction of the diamond (which is carbon) with the elements of the material being cut in the presence of oxygen in the air.
